In January 2001, the former Pusan International Contemporary Art Festival (PICAF) was renamed the Busan Biennale. The different spelling of the city's name corresponds to the new regulations for the transcription of the Korean language from December 1999.
Since 1981, there had been a biennial for young artists in Busan (then Pusan). It was later joined by the Sea Art Festival (art on the beach, since 1987) as well as exhibitions and symposia for open-air sculpture (since 1991). Out of these precursors came the Pusan International Contemporary Art Festival, organized in 1998 and 2000, and which is now continued under the name Busan Biennale.
