Architecture in the 7th Havana Biennial (Taken from the press release of the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wifredo Lam, August 2000) The fundamental aim of the seventh edition of the Havana Biennial is the inclusion of architecture and urbanism as artistic manifestations in the exhibitions, conferences and workshops. Renowned specialists from Cuba as well as abroad have been invited to communicate their experiences in interaction with the existing city. The restoration of historic places, the renewal of central zones and the design of public space are a few of the topics that will be addressed in the context of the coming Biennial. |

Cuban Architecture Exhibitions Overall coordination: María Elena Martín (Architect) The Preservation of the Historic City This exhibition will be a tribute to architectural restoration of the past 40 years. It is chronologically structured, and explanatory texts will emphasize the historic moments of great significance in the restoration of Havana's cultural legacy. In addition, restoration work in the historic and urban centers of the country's important cities will be presented, for example in Santiago de Cuba, Trinidad, Cienfuegos and Santa Clara. Location: Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad The Transformation of the Contemporary City Three topics will be presented within the context of Havana's urban ambience: the design of a park street in the city district of Central Havana, the experiences of the workshops for the quarter's integral change with regard to teamwork and the strategy for the overall development of the city. Similar works will be presented by other countries, for example Venezuela with its project "Housing Policy 1999-2004". Location: Grupo para el Desarrollo Integral de la Ciudad The Havana of the Future This exhibition will offer a vision of Havana's future urban development in its presentation of the scheme of spatial order and other projects on important zones in the capital. Location: Dirección Provincial de Planificación Física National Activity in Architecture National Activity in Architecture will be depicted in an exhibition of the works of the seven recipients of the National Architecture Prize. This prize is awarded annually by the National Association of Cuban Architects and Civic Engineers in recognition of professional life work. Location: UNAICC (Unión Nacional de Arquitectos e Ingenieros de la Construcción de Cuba) Cuban Architecture of the Sixties The so-called "grand decade of Cuban architecture" is honored with the exhibition of the most significant buildings realized in Cuba during this period. Latin American Architecture Exhibitions Experimental City. Proposals for the Preservation of Quarters and Other Similar Projects (Venezuela) Locations: Galería Imago, Gran Teatro de Havanna Project for the Historic Park of Guayaquil (Ecuador) Location: Consejo de la Administración Municipal de la Habana Vieja Project for the Comprehensive Preservation of Santa Ana de Velasco-Chiquitos (Bolivia - Cuba) Location: Centro Literario y Cultural Leonor Pérez Arquitetura. Arte. Cidade (Brazil) Location: Ministerio de Finanzas y Precios Workshops During the Biennial, three workshops will be held on urban revival under the participation of architects, designers and artists as well as students of these disciplines. The selected locations are: La Rampa, from Malecón to Calle J; the Malecón from Calle 23 to Prado; Avenida de Rancho Boyeros, from Calzada del Cerro to Avenida Van Troi.
