Misook Song, the artistic director of the first edition of media_city seoul, suggested the theme "city between 0 and 1 ". On the choice of the binary number combination, she said in an interview: "I not only wanted to allude to the inexhaustable synergies that are freed up between 0 and 1, but also to the opposition between 0 and 1." [1] With the latter she meant, among other things, an "opposition of values" between the number 1 which, with its hard form, could symbolize the masculine Yang element, and the round soft form of the number 0, in which she sees the "feminine element of non-existence, the Yin element".
Furthermore, in the website's introduction was the reference to the transition from analog to digital technology, which the binary numbers should represent, as well as reference to the "enormous potential" of the city in this process, because the city "harmonizes the opposite elements of humanity and technology". In this regard, urban space of the modern metropolis received a central meaning at media_city seoul 2000.
