Prayer Carpet. 2006
Woven carpet installation
Xu Bing had weaved Buddhist text passages into the first version of the prayer carpet, which was supposed to lie on the floor of the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple's main room (please refer also to the National Museum). However, it was indicated to him that believers coming to the Temple to pray might find it offensive or even a sacrilege to step on the holy writings. Therefore, the artist created a new inoffensive carpet, with these writings weaved into it. It will be on display in the Temple from mid-October onwards.
