Prayer Carpet. 2006
Woven carpet installation, 800 x 800 cm
Initially this carpet was supposed to lie on the floor of the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple's main room. However the temple committee expressed their unease about believers stepping on the holy Buddhist text passages, which Xu Bing had incorporated in the carpet. Therefore the artist responded with a further uncontroversial piece for the Temple, while the older version remains on display in the National Museum.
