Escala (stop-over). 2006
Mixed media installation
The whole room becomes a gigantic tabletop football game incorporating also normal sized versions designed by other artists. The big player figures carry smaller carved sculptures in their bellies. They are inspired by the modified images of Christian saints, whom the black Caribbean population started to pray to, after their own religion had been banned. This piece contains a multitude of topical aspects, eg. the circumventions and camouflage often needed in order to retain one's belief and principles, as well as the general hybridity of Caribbean culture.
