In 1960, the Housing & Development Board (HDB) was tasked
with providing affordable public housing for Singaporeans. Blk 79 Indus
Road is a slab block completed in 1971. It has a total of 520 one-room
rental units meant for the low-income group. The block design is simple
and functional - a "double-loaded" block with a central corridor.
The block has undergone a Project to Improve Living Conditions of the
Elderly in 2000. The improvement work was mostly carried out within
the units. The block and the precinct were also upgraded under the Main
Upgrading Programme and upgrading works were completed in 2004.
Today 86 % of Singapore's inhabitants live in HDB-apartment
blocks. From them, more than 90 % own their apartments.
