Founded in 1849 as the Raffles Library and Museum, originally
housed in the library of the Singapore Institution (later the Raffles
Institution). Its own building, located on Stamford Road and built according
to designs by Sir Henry McCallum, opened October 12, 1887. From 1906
to 1934 various renovations. In 1960 separated from the library and
renamed The National Museum. In the 1980s, under the management of the
National Heritage Board, further renovations took place and it was renamed The Singapore
History Museum.
The institution meanwhile named The National Museum
again has been closed due to renovations since April 2003 and is being
greatly expanded. After the scheduled reopening in December 2006, a
total of 18,375 square meters of usable surface space will be available,
as opposed to its previous 8,000 square meters. Not only will The National
Museum then offer a location for exhibitions, but also venues for festivals
and other events, fostering new creative possibilities in culture and
dealing with cultural heritage.
