The Biennale of Sydney is Australia’s
largest and most exciting visual arts event. Renowned for showcasing
the freshest and most innovative contemporary art from around the world
the festival is held in Sydney’s leading museums and galleries,
including the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Museum of Contemporary
Art, and features outdoor exhibition trails along Sydney’s glorious
harbour foreshore. Exciting new projects will be created for specific
public sites and outdoor locations and an international program of performances,
public talks, symposia and workshops will be held over the duration
of the Biennale.
In the 35 years from 1973 to 2008, the Biennale of Sydney has presented
16 critically acclaimed, popular and large-scale exhibitions - bringing
the work of over 1355 artists from more than 82 countries to Australia.
The Biennale of Sydney’s history is one of "firsts"
in promoting cultural exchange, championing freedom of speech and expression
and challenging the status quo in Australia. The Biennale was among
the first to celebrate Australia’s cultural and ethnic diversity
(1976 & 1979); the first to show indigenous art in an international
contemporary art context (1979); the first to focus on Asia and the
contemporary art of our region (1973 & 1976); and being among the
first to present to wide audiences the art of the social change movements
which transformed Australian society (1979, 1982 & 1984).
