Biennial of the End of the World 2007
Bienal del Fin del Mundo, Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego / Argentina
Introduction (print version)
The first edition of the "Biennial of the End of the World" (Bienal
del Fin del Mundo) is an Argentinean contribution to the International Polar
Year 2007/2008. The event is a joint project between Argentina and Brazil
and is actualized by the Argentinean Fundación Patagonia Arte y Desafío
with the institutional support of the Fundação Memorial da América
Latina from São Paulo, Brazil.
Basically, the Biennial’s theme can be summarized as " pondering at the end of the world, what other world is possible " (Pensar en el fin del mundo, qué otro mundo es posible). An aesthetic discourse of such sorts shall be articulated by linking art and politics with poetry, ecology and technology (for further details refer to the 4 thematic focuses – Dates & Facts).
The first "Biennial of the End of the World" will artistically join both Poles, Arctica and Antarctica, in real time by means of electronic stations. The visitors in Ushuaia as well as interested people in Northern Canada and Finland shall be able to view the artists and their work on projection screens, and be able to directly communicate with them, becoming themselves part of this multimedia performance.
The Biennial spreads over the whole area of Ushuaia and the Beagle Channel. Participating artists are asked to create site-specific pieces using local materials and spacial conditions, while being supported by the local population.
The concept of a Contemporary Polar Museum of Art, Technology and Environment at the End of the World and the refreshing of the city Ushuaia after the plans of two renowned architects are two of several special projects accompanying the Biennial.
From September 2006 onwards, symposia and forums will be held in Buenos Aires, São Paulo and Ushuaia in preparation of and during the Biennial.
