Protest resolution of the artists
As participants in the 49th Venice Biennale, the undersigned artists declare:
1. That the Latin American countries, coordinated by IILA (Instituto Italo-Latinoamericano), make up more than 20 percent of all countries participating in the Biennale. If the central organization of the 49th Venice Biennale is interested in a truly international juxtaposition, it cannot neglect responsibility for everything exhibited in its name, especially when faced with the theme: »Plateau of Humankind«.
2. That we denounce the absolute lack of financial support on the part of most of our own countries, and the failure to allocate us an adequate venue, as well as with regards to the technical assistance necessary for a proper presentation of our work.
3. That, though we are thankful for the efforts and good will from the IILA, this does not suffice to professionally carry out an event of such dimensions, and does not bespeak the necessary respect towards the artists, towards the dignity of the Biennale, and towards the audience in general.
4. Because the Latin American participation is in the form of a collective, it is of fundamental importance that the exhibition be planned with a professional curatorial vision, enabling a coherence of the presented works within the framework of contemporary art. This has always been a foundation for the Venice Biennale.
5. That the fragmentation of the Biennale and our presence beyond Venice's city limits was not a decision made by the artists. This situation impedes a balanced overview of the exhibition, complicates the exchange with colleagues, and invalidates our presence on this »Plateau of Humankind«.
Finally we wish to express that, if the fundamental conditions necessary for a dignified presentation are not fulfilled, it would be preferable to revoke the entire Latin American Pavilion - IILA.
