Warp and Weft

Thanks to its continuity over time and the large range of aspects it covers, the Venice Biennale is one of the most important contemporary art exhibitions in the world, an event of fundamental importance in the visual arts panorama.

In its varied and many sided project to increase awareness of Latin American culture in the world, IILA, the Italo-Latin American Institute, has invited sixteen of the best-known artists from its twelve member countries to exhibit in its pavilion at this year's Biennale:
Joaquín Sánchez, Guiomar Mesa (Bolivia) , Gonzalo Díaz (Chile), Juan Manuel Echavarría, Oswaldo Macià, Oscar Muñoz (Colombia), Cecilia Paredes, Jaime David Tischler (Costa Rica), Los Carpinteros (Cuba), Luis Paredes (El Salvador), Luis González Palma (Guatemala), Maksaens Denis (Haiti), Donna Conlon (Panama) , Mónica González (Paraguay), Luz María Bedoya (Peru), Polibio Díaz (Dominican Republic).

Taking account of the guidelines set for the 51st visual arts Biennale by the curators, María del Corral and Rosa Martinez, the theme chosen for the IILA pavilion is Warp and Weft. The venue is Palazzo Cavalli Franchetti on the Canal Grande, one of Venice's most intriguing palaces from the 1400s, restored in 1886 by Camillo Boito.

Warp and Weft - weaving schemes and textures as well as cloth. A title sufficiently open and stimulating to embrace different approaches in which the spectator can enter a dialogue with a variety of beliefs and symbols: with urban and cultural landscapes, fears and anxieties, drama and violence; with the poetry of objects and everyday life, beauty, creativity, humour; above all, with Latin America's art.
