Urs Jaeggi Spinoza istTV Walk(Episodes) Art Clay, 2005 All Episodes: Episode I: Placement: This episode takes place between the Beginn Scene and the Die Schule Scene. Effect: Freeze. (This episode is employed as a freeze. Meaning that during playback the actors do nothing. The actors and the stage setting appear to be elements of a ãlive pictureÒ through the freeze.) Action: The State and The Church have frozen their positions. The State has his arms crossed and is leaning against the chalkboards of left side of the Grand Cube. The Church is pinned under a cube on the floor at stage left. Spinoza has decided to take a walk and announces it with a text fragment from the actual episode which is to come on the TVs: "Ich glaube, ich gehe spazieren. Das hilft." He then gets up and goes off stage as if he is going for a walk. The video enters as he leaves it. (Spinoza then hides behind the cube) Text Epi_1: (Numbers refer to the actual stored video clips that contain the texts listed.) 1. Z................................................ Z................................................ Z................................................ 2. Geh! Geh weiter! ---------------------------------------------------------------- ((Episode II: Placement: This episode takes place at the middle of the Die Schule scene as to break it up. Effect: Freeze. Action: Spinoza is still hiding behind the Grand Cube only coming out to yell a sentence or two out. The State has just dropped The Church on to floor after The Church has done the pushups The Church is crouched on the floor and is propped against Cube 9 with his face toward the floor. The State and The Church have frozen their positions again. Text Epi_2: 3. Keine augenfällige Verwend Bei jeder Beweg Offenkundig nichts Ausein- ander gefaltet freihängend im Foto um Schlimmer zu weil Von allem Zu sagen nicht es ist Zeit fehlt, um über Zeit fehlt ZZZZ... .ZZZZZ.........ZZZZZZ ist Lässt nicht Lässt nicht Lässt nicht im Lässt nicht im Stich!)) ---------------------------------------------------------------- Episode III: Placement: This episode takes place during the Die Schule scene after The Church stands up from his previous crouched position. The Church stands up turns to The State and stares him hatefully in the eyes. A long silent pause ensues and during this pause the text will start with the sentence "already they flee". Upon hearing this sentence, (The Church and?) The State leaves the center stage. (Side Note perhaps they should make a round around the Grand Cube as in the opening scene.?) Effect: Accompany. (This episode is employed as an accompaniment, which means that the action taken by the actors reinforce the contents of the text in an abstracted way. Meaning that during playback the actors have particular actions sequences to do in synch with the video clips.) Action Part 1: Spinoza is still hiding behind the Grand Cube only coming out to yell a sentences or two out. The State is moving to far right stage. The Church is standing by the chalkboards of the Grand Cube and facing the audience. He turns around and starts banging his head against the chalkboards. He stops and then gradually he makes his way toward The State, who is coaxing him to come. (Side note: TV turn, sexual innuendos, banging on one of the cubes or something that is annoying for The Church will do.) Text Epi_3a: 4a. Already they flee Z Z Z ist Z Z Z Z hat Z Z Z Z Z hat gehabt wird haben 1 t2 t 1 t2 t n... Jede Menge Undurchsichtigkeiten, Nichtwahr- Nehmbares (Note: This text should come when the "new part" in which the State takes the arm of The Church and draws an "X" on the Chalkboard is about to happen.) 6. Arm in Arm den Moment (erste Lektion, zweiter Satz.) wiederholen mit jedem Sack weil Schlag auf Schlag auf den. Die Nase quer Ja alle Tage diesmal nicht so nicht Es sei denn oder nicht rühren ein paar Worte in Ermangelung (Von wegen) Action Part 2: "Sexy Cross" & "Stuffed Cube" Spinoza is still hiding behind the Grand Cube only coming out to yell a sentence or two out. The State comes to the front of the Grand Cube and poses against it facing the audience in the form of a cross. He then seduces the Church to come to him by lending the cross position an erotic element (a position similar to that of a prostitute soliciting on street corner: i.e. right knee crossed over left shoulder up.). The State also wags his tongue at The Church. The Church approaches him with his mouth in an oral sex position. As The Church nears the Grand Cube, The State flips cube 9 onto its left side so that it is ready for the Church to crawl into it. The Church, at the same time he is nearing the opening of the cube, he walks less and less erect so that a smooth transition takes place. Finally on his knees, The Church lowers his head and disappears into the cube. To accompany The ChurchÕs crawling into the cube, The State bangs his head on the top of the cube repeatedly while standing with his hands at the sides of cube 9. (Side note: All of this serves as a sexual metaphor.) Text: Text Epi_3b: (Seduction scene where The State plays "sexy cross".) 5. Sie nahm sich Oh O‡h! Sie Oh h Oh Oh geht kommt Sie nahm sich Tsch tsch tschtsch tch geschenkt So viel Wie (The Church crawls into the cube; the State bangs his head. The first sentence should act as a cue for the actor so that he has time to get to the cube.) 4b. Auf einer grosssen Wiese werden Zähne verteilt . Käuflich, käuflich auf jeden Fall und wie Verkroch sich in die nächstliegende Behausung, schleppte die Matratze schleppte sie in eine Ecke hüllte sich in Decken und polsterte den Kopf mit den muffig riechenden Kissen imÉ ---------------------------------------------------------------- Non-Episode IV: "Hide & Seek" Placement: This Non-episode takes place during the building of Die Stadt stage set just after the End of the Die Schule scene. Effect: Breather. This effect is used to clear the stage mentally for something new. No video runs (i.e. no text), little or no music. Therefore it is called a breather. Action: Spinoza is sneaking about changing the TVs around. The Church is stuffed into Cube 9. He occasionally bangs on the wall of the cube to let everyone know that he is still here. The Church is moving Cubes 10 to 18 about to set up the "Die Stadt". He slowly notices that someone is changing the TVs around which he has positioned. He is growing gradually suspicious and starts pausing and looking about for the perpetrator. Text: Epi_5 SideNoteDuring this part Spinoza gives his sentences out behind the back of the State. 6. The text is not played back via Video clips, but is recited by The State. The text is slightly modified from the original video clip text. See score "TeethSeeds" for more detail. Effect: Text-Performance. This non-episode is a performance, which has a set choreography to the text. Action Part Spinoza is wandering about changing TVs. (and maybe with a flashlight to illuminate unlit distant corners of the stage area.) The Church is stuffed in cube 9 The State is performing "TeethSeeds". Text: This is the text from the performance. Mit brennenden und blutenden Füssen im UNTITLED Dipdip dip dip ---------------------------------------------------------------- Episode VII: "Birthing" Placement: This Episode takes place at the moment The Church is to come out of the Cube 9 to perform the "Birthing" performance. Effect: Accompany. The speed of the video is to be slowed down extremely and the background color set to red. The picture of the mouth should at one point be frozen on all monitors. Action: Spinoza is hiding behind the Grand Cube again. And does not come out to yell sentences. The State is hinding behind the Grand Cube again. The Church is stuffed in the cube, has tunred around and has switched on the light inside the cube. He is re-costumed and is ready to emerge out of the cube and does so with the start of Video Clip 13. After the text has ended The Church continues ad lib with the performance. Text: Epi_7 13. wachte nach drei Tagen wieder auf, kochte Wasser in allen Töpfen um die Wanne zu füllen, badete, zog sich an kochte eine Bohnen- und Gerstensuppe für acht ihr bekannte, sich nur mit Zahlen Anredende. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ (wiederholen) ---------------------------------------------------------------- Episode VIII: "Strobo-Cop" Placement: This Episode takes place during the long building phase of the Church. Effect: Free. Action: Spinoza is at the back of the stage. (The position behind the Grand Cube that is no longer there). He is manning the high-powered strobe light and flashes each of the cubes used for the church at the luminous side. He is also responsible for plugging the TVs back in that where removed from the front of the stage and brought to the back. The speed of the video is increased drastically until a mickey mouse like level is reached. The Church and The State are joined in building the Church. They take away the Cubes, which donÕt make up the church and place the ones that do. Text: (Note: It mainly consist of noises made by Spinoza and centers around the sentence " Spinoza ist!". Word fragments may be picked up uttered by all the actors to intensify the scene.) 1. Z................................................ Z................................................
