Calumnia (Slander). 2007
Installation of perfume
Oswaldo Macià, an artist from Cartagena residing in London, reminds us that although we perceive reality with all our senses, art has nearly always given priority to vision. Accordingly, his works involve touch, smell and hearing. "Calumnia" (Slander), located in a vault in San Pedro Claver Church, is an interpretation of Botticelli's painting "The Calumny of Apelles" in which the vices surrounding and threatening Power are depicted. Macià worked with a master perfumer to create the "smell of slander," which emanates from an oscillating pendulum that refers to the censers used in religious ceremonies in many cultures.
