Aguantando cable. 2007
Project in the public space
When we talk about the Spanish language we almost always mean "educated" Spanish, but in point of fact, the majority of Spanish speaking people use a language marked by local accents, words and expressions that are often unintelligible to others. "Aguantando cable", a project by Colombian artists Rafael Ortiz and Wilger Sotelo, gathers a series of expressions which are very common in the popular dialect of Cartagena. These words and phrases are shown as dictionary entries in big posters placed in different parts of the historic quarter of the city. The project intends to dignify - through typographic formalization and monumental scale - the language of the streets, a way of communication often disdained by "educated" language advocates.
