St Joseph's Church is closely tied to the history
of the Portuguese mission in Singapore. Pater Francisco da Silva Pinto
e Maia, head of the mission until 1850, used a donation from the King
of Portugal to erect the first building on this site between 1851 and
1853. From 1906 to 1912, it was torn down and replaced by the Neo-Gothic
building that has been preserved to this day. In the late 1990s, the
Church became the property of the Archbishopric of Singapore.
