|
Singapore ’s national Art Museum, an institution
of the National Heritage Board (NHB), was opened in January 1996 in
the restored building of a Catholic boy’s school, St. Joseph's
Institution, which was originally built in 1855. The museum’s
collection includes more than 7,000 works of modern art from Singapore
and Southeast Asia, making it the largest of this type in the region.
The SAM presents art from Singapore, Asia, and other
parts of the world in its many temporary exhibitions. With its publications,
research, educational programs, and scientific and popular events, the
museum works for the cultivation, spread, and greater appreciation of
modern art, especially that of Southeast Asia.
