Sculpture Square is the center for contemporary three-dimensional
art, especially by artists from Singapore and Southeast Asia. Its activities
include exhibitions, publications, and information programs, residence
programs for artists and curators, and symposia and workshops.
The center is located in the former Middle Road Church,
where the Methodist congregation of Singapore was founded. It was built
between 1870 and 1875 as the Christian Institute and became Singapore’s
first Chinese Methodist church in 1894, under the name Baba Church.
In 1929, the congregation moved to Kampong Kapor Road. The old building
has since been used for a variety of purposes, including as a garage.
