Chambacú Albalá. 2007
Drawings
Johanna Calle uses writing as lines to create drawings of a complex texture, filled with narrative, where subject matter, form and contents are but one. The "Chambacú Albalá" project comprises a series of drawings - which from a distance are reminiscent of the Mudéjar-style ornamentation seen in the houses of Cartagena - made with words and phrases, referring to the fact that a high percentage of Spanish words are of Arabic origin. These drawings-writings are accompanied by birdcages that have been modified to resemble the spontaneous buildings found in the Chambacú neighborhood, an area that has undergone a segregated and chaotic urban development. In both works, the artist emphasizes tears and anomalies in the structure, showing that what is seemingly orderly and rational is full of unevenness.
