The second international Biennale, the fourth altogether, corresponded
directly to the character of Shanghai as China's fastest growing boomtown. The concept was entirely focused on urban developments in China and their consequences for society.
For the first time, visual art and architecture were shown together. A total of 68 artists and architects from 20 countries were invited (see list). In addition to the ca. 300 works in the Shanghai Art Museum, there were also site-specific pieces created especially for the Biennale.
